Relevant Singapore Laws & Regulations

To ensure a safe and compliant stay in Singapore, students are expected to understand and adhere to local laws and regulations.

To drive in Singapore, you must hold a valid Singaporean driving licence for the specific class of vehicle you intend to drive. This applies to Singapore citizens, permanent residents, and foreign residents who have been living in Singapore for more than 12 months.

Foreigners residing in Singapore for less than 12 months must hold a valid foreign driving licence along with an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued by an authorized body in their home country (e.g., the Automobile Association). If an IDP is unavailable, an official English translation of the foreign licence is required.

Drivers from ASEAN member countries are exempt from the IDP requirement and only need a valid driving licence issued by the relevant authority in their home country.

Possession of controlled drugs is presumed to be for trafficking, a serious offence that can carry the death penalty. Offences committed under the influence of alcohol or drugs, such as drunk driving, are punishable by law. For more information, please visit the Singapore Statutes Online website.

Foreign students are not permitted to work in Singapore during term time or vacation unless they are granted a Work Pass exemption under the Employment of Foreign Manpower (Work Pass Exemptions) Notification.

For more details, please visit the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) website.

Smoking is prohibited in enclosed public areas such as schools, cinemas, public transport, offices, and indoor restaurants. These places will display clear warning signs.

Jaywalking is considered an offence.

Littering
Littering, spitting, and vandalism (including graffiti) in public areas are serious offences.

Accommodation Support

Students who require assistance in sourcing accommodation in Singapore may approach
Birmingham Academy
for guidance. We help recommend or introduce accommodation options based on individual
preferences and
availability.

Accommodation Options Include:

  • Homestays / Hostels
  • Rental of HDB flat or room
  • Rental of private flat or room

Estimated Cost:

Monthly rental rates typically range from SGD 500 to SGD 1,500, depending on location,
type of accommodation,
and facilities. Students should also plan for additional expenses such as food,
transportation,
entertainment, and other personal costs.

Cost of Living

When budgeting, it’s important to account for expenses such as accommodation, food, transportation, clothing, telecommunications, books and stationery, medical insurance, and other personal costs. On average, an international student in Singapore spends between S$750 and S$2,000 per month on living expenses.

Healthcare Support

If you’re feeling unwell and need medical attention, students can:

  • Visit a nearby private clinic.

  • For emergencies, go to the Accident & Emergency (A&E) department of any hospital.

  • If you require an ambulance, dial 995 for urgent assistance from the Singapore Civil Defence Force. For non-urgent ambulance services, dial 1777.

Additionally, Birmingham Academy provides students with Group Hospitalization & Surgical Insurance, fully compliant with the EduTrust guidelines set by the SSG. This insurance covers hospitalization and surgery costs up to S$20,000 annually per student, which is typically sufficient for most cases.
