N-Levels
After completing the N-Levels, students may consider a range of progression pathways depending on their academic strengths, learning preferences, and future goals. These pathways may follow Singapore’s mainstream education system or alternative academic routes offered through private education.
-
Take O-Levels at Secondary 5:
Students who meet specific criteria can continue their secondary education for an additional year (Secondary 5) to take the O-Level examinations. -
Institute of Technical Education (ITE):
Institute of Technical Education (ITE) offers two robust educational pathways for students seeking full-time courses. The first pathway involves enrolment in Nitec courses. These are foundation-level programmes providing practical skills and industry-oriented knowledge in diverse fields such as engineering, business, and hospitality. The second pathway, newly introduced from 2024, comprises three-year Higher Nitec courses. This pathway allows students the opportunity to attain qualifications in three years instead of four. -
Direct-Entry-Scheme to Polytechnic Programme (DPP):
The Direct-Entry-Scheme to Polytechnic Programme (DPP) is one of the two pathways for Normal (Academic) students that were launched in 2013. It allows Secondary 4 N(A) students to be admitted directly into a 2-year Higher Nitec programme at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) without having to sit for the O-Level examinations or undergo a Nitec programme. If you successfully complete the course with the minimum required Grade Point Average (GPA), you are guaranteed a place in a polytechnic diploma course mapped to your Higher Nitec course[1]. -
Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP):
Students with an ELMAB3 score of 12 points or less can enrol in the one-year PFP, offering a practice-oriented curriculum taught by polytechnic lecturers to prepare N(A) students for entry into relevant diploma courses. -
International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE):
Students who prefer an international academic route may pursue the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), a globally recognised secondary qualification awarded by international examination boards such as Pearson Edexcel or Cambridge.
The IGCSE curriculum offers a broad academic foundation across core subjects and is designed to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and subject knowledge. This pathway is suitable for students who plan to progress to international pre-university programmes, diploma courses, or overseas higher education institutions.
- Singapore-Cambridge GCE O-Level / A-Level: Students who wish to remain within Singapore’s national education framework may take the Singapore-Cambridge GCE O-Level or A-Level examinations as private candidates after completing a preparatory course. These national examinations follow syllabuses set by the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB) in collaboration with Cambridge Assessment International Education. This pathway is commonly chosen by students who intend to progress to local institutions such as polytechnics, junior colleges, or universities that recognise the Singapore-Cambridge GCE qualifications.
For students who wish to pursue either an international or national examination route through private education, Birmingham Academy offers structured academic programmes designed to support successful progression after N-Levels.

- GCE O-Level Preparatory Course: typically 12 months
- GCE A-Level Preparatory Course: typically 12–24 months, depending on track

After completing the IGCSE, students may progress to a certificate-level foundation programme that provides focused academic preparation before entering diploma studies.

N-Level → IGCSE → Certificate → Diploma → Bachelor’s Degree
