Important Information For International Students

Singapore Immigration Checkpoints and Authority (ICA) required foreigners to apply for a Student’s Pass if he/she wishes to pursue full-time studies in Singapore.

Student’s Pass Application

An international student who has received a Letter of Conditional Acceptance from Birmingham can apply for a Student’s Pass via Birmingham Academy.

Renewal of Student’s Pass

Renewal of a Student Pass applied to students who wish to continue their studies in Birmingham. Application for renewal of Student’s Pass must be submitted at least two (2) weeks before the expiry of the current Student’s Pass.

Cancellation of Student’s Pass

Foreign students are required to surrender their Student’s Passes for cancellation within seven (7) days from the date of cessation or termination of their study. The student needs to approach Birmingham with the following documents for cancellation:

  1. A duly completed cancellation form
  2. The foreign student’s valid travel document (document must have at least six (6) months validity)
  3. The Student’s Pass Card (IMM Form 17A)

Students will be issued a Social Visit Pass on their passports to allow them to exit Singapore. If students fail to do so, they will be deemed to be residing unlawfully in Singapore and will be liable for a fine, failing which they will be charged in court.

Update of Address & Contact Number

Under regulation 8(5)(b) of the Immigration Regulations, foreign students are required to report to ICA if there is a change in their local address within 14 days after the change of residence via ICA – Change of Residential Address

For STP holders who require assistance with update of their address, they can contact ICA at Go.gov.sg

Singapore Laws

Penalty Cases

⚠️ International students in Singapore must strictly comply with all Student’s Pass conditions set by the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and Ministry of Manpower (MOM).

Common violations include failing to update residential address, working without approval, or exceeding permitted working hours.

There have been real cases where foreigners faced serious consequences for immigration and regulatory breaches—for example, a foreigner was jailed and caned for entering Singapore illegally (CNA), while others caught possessing or using vapes risk having their passes revoked, deported, and banned from re-entering Singapore (Straits Times). Authorities may also deny entry to foreigners who fail to meet entry requirements or have prior violations (Mothership).

As such, even administrative or regulatory breaches may result in Student’s Pass cancellation, fines, detention or deportation, and possible future entry restrictions into Singapore.
